Mexicali Police plans to install 16 checkpoints during this month in order to protect residents while addressing traffic violations.

Mexicali Police Chief Joel Hidalgo said 235 patrol cars and the agency’s 1,246 police officers will take part in the operation.

For Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the number of checkpoints is expected to increase to 24.

State and Mexican law enforcement agencies will also be included in the operation.

Although Mexicali Police has had issues with telecommunications Chief Hidalgo said officers will use other technology. Mexicali Mayor Norma Bustamante said the city has recorded 2,121 traffic accidents just in October. In close to four out of every five accidents alcohol was involved.
