The City of Mexicali fined close to a hundred bars for violations detected during staff visits.

Mexicali Department of Operations and Enforcement Manager Oscar Reséndiz said most of the fines were due to the business failure to show alcohol permits.

Besides, eight additional bars were fined for closing after hours. Fines in this case can reach about $2,500 and even face a temporary closure in case of a second violation.

Reséndiz said businesses can also be fined for promoting excessive alcohol consumption. Although the agency must inspect all venues where alcohol is sold the city had only 16 inspectors for the city and rural towns.
