A state lawmaker introduced a bill that, if enacted, would allow spouses to file for divorce without a justification.

Assemblywoman Evelyn Sánchez introduced a bill that seeks to reform the Civil Code.

According to the lawmaker, the Assembly has recently modified the code in order to set marriage as the free union of two individuals.

However, in order to file for divorce a spouse must justify the request, which in turn has become a discriminatory obstacle to put marriage to an end in violation of the Constitution.

Sánchez seeks to make divorce an easy and fast procedure.

Since 2015, the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that judges cannot condition a divorce by basing it in a cause.

“Judges in the state are obligated to apply such ruling in divorce cases even though it is not regulated,” Sánchez said.
