An Israel company expects an improvement of yields through the use of drop irrigation in Baja California.

Oscar Gonzalez, Director in Mexico of Israel-based Company Netafim, held a meeting with representatives of the Department of Agriculture to explain the company’s 50-year expertise in irrigation of arid fields.

In Mexico this technique is used to grow corn — a method used in Israel since the sixties.

Secretary of Agriculture Juan Meléndrez highlighted the need to start growing other products with different techniques to optimize water use.

Although drop irrigation requires a significant investment, authorities said benefits in yields and quality make the investment worthwhile. The agency and the company agreed to educate growers and this technique.
