Justices with the Mexican Electoral Court voted down a citizen request to hold a referendum against abortion.

Unanimously, justices confirmed the special election could not take place as requested by Luis Alberto Juárez Fernández.

The proposal was previously dismissed by the Regional Court, the Baja California Court and the State Electoral Council Board.

The measure would have allowed voters decide the fate of the abortion bill approved by the Baja California Assembly.

Justices and board members dismissed the referendum request as law mandates that human rights are not a subject that qualifies for a referendum. The referendum was killed as the Mexican Electoral Court is the last and final entity that can legally consider the matter.
