A city official said those found selling or using fireworks can be fined with up to 17,924 pesos or close to $900.

City Director of Environmental Protection Director Manuel Zamora said with the exception of Cohetería Cachanilla no business will be allowed to sell fireworks in Mexicali. The company has a permit from the Department of National Defense.

The city will not allow fireworks usage in sports events, Christmas parties, massive events, and other similar events.

Zamora said the goal is not to affect businesses but to address pollution issues.

The city official said the police can stop people who use fireworks. All city agencies will help enforce the local ordinance, while the Department of Government and Mexicali Fire Department will help seize illegal fireworks.
