Mexicali police said the number of homicides has seen a decline of about 50 percent.

According to the authorities 34 homicides were reported in January — a figure that declined to 21 in February and 17 last month.

“This means operations and protocols are working,” Mexicali Police Chief Pedro Ariel Mendívil told La Voz newspaper. “The challenge is to keep working.”

The US Department of State recently warned American citizens of visiting rural Mexicali due to increased criminal activity — especially kidnappings and homicides.

Chief Mendívil told the newspaper that most of the 70 homicides reported this year had occurred in the urban area. Last month only two homicides were reported in Mexicali Valley.
