A Salvadoran immigrant was allegedly kidnapped and released after relatives paid $10,000, according to media reports.
La Voz newspaper reported that the immigrant was kidnapped by smugglers under the promise to cross him to the U.S.
At 1:40 p.m. Tuesday a person was reported as kidnapped in Fraccionamiento Las Californias neighborhood.
State Anti-Kidnapping officers arrived at the scene and found Luis David, 22, of El Salvador, who told police agents a relative paid $1,500 to get to the border.
Once in Mexicali, the immigrant was asked $7,000.
However, smugglers started punching the immigrant during a video call with his family members and demanded a $2,500 payment for his release.
The immigrant was left in a residence. State police officers are investigating the issue.
