Months after a restaurant that hired mostly employees with Down syndrome shut down due to a state infrastructure project, the business was modified and reopened.

Carne en su Jugo restaurant was opened in March 2019 in the corner of Lázaro Cardenas Boulevard and Rio Nuevo Boulevard. However, the business closed in June due to the construction of the new bridge in the area that is still in development.

Three weeks ago the company reopened, but this time as a chocolate factory named Mundo de Chocolate.

The new company has hired only six employees and produces chocolate bars with different flavors, La Voz newspaper reported.

Owner David Rangel said this time the target customers are schools.

Customers will be given the chance to observe first-hand how chocolate bars are made, the owner said.

So far, the company works by phone and social media. Part of the proceeds will go to a Down syndrome nonprofit organization. “The essence of this project is to make employees feel useful and promote their self-confidence,” Rangel told the newspaper. “They are cognizant that this is not a game, but a responsibility.”
