A state lawmaker introduced a resolution that calls state authorities to investigate the assignment of bodyguards to a couple former officials.

Assemblyman Diego Echevarría, of the National Action Party, introduced the resolution that asks for an investigation of former Secretary of Government Amador Rodriguez and former Penitentiary System Commissioner Jesus Nuñez.

Three days before the end of the past administration Rodriguez issued a memorandum that provided bodyguards and vehicles to both officials for at least year.

Rodriguez said in the document he and Nuñez feared for their lives and those of their families given they led the Penitentiary System that had on custody members of organized crime.

“This action is an evident abuse of power that represents a deviation of funds,” Echevarría said. “Besides it is an immoral act given the correctional and public safety needs.”
