A state lawmaker introduced a bill to modify the Penal Code in order to punish discrimination.

National Action Party Assemblywoman Alejandrina Corral made a proposal that in the last years the country has sought to promote dignity and equality among citizens while addressing discrimination based on race, language, sex, religion, ethnic origin, socioeconomic level and disability.

Discrimination goes against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other regulations set by the United Nations, she said.

“Unfortunately, discrimination is still ongoing in some countries, Mexico and Baja California,” the lawmaker said. Corral, who chairs the Commission of Human Rights, proposed to punish public officials who discriminate against those who seek services, especially education services, or violates others rights.
