Mexicali Mayor Norma Bustamante announced that Police Chief Joel Duéñez will step down from office.
The city official will be succeeded by Assistant Attorney General in Mexicali Pedro Ariel Mendívil.
Several weeks ago the mayor said changes were expected in city offices. The first change was the removal of City Public Works Director Georgina Wilhelmy Woolfolk.
The nomination of Chief Duéñez was confirmed by the City Council back in October. Mendívil, who has been Assistant Attorney General in the city since 2019, must be confirmed by the council.
