State Penitentiary System Commissioner Maria Elena Andrade announced Tuesday that 116 Mexicali prisoners were transferred to Tecate’s El Hongo Prison.

According to the Commissioner the transferring was held to alleviate the overcrowding of 60 percent in Mexicali Prison.

Transferred prisoners have been convicted of crimes like homicide, drugs, kidnapping and prohibited firearm possession.

Local, state and Mexican law enforcement agents help transport the prisoners, Commissioner Andrade said.

The prisoners were transported in two buses and a couple of vans. The Commissioner asked relatives of transferred prisoners to approach the agency in order to get news about their family members.
