Mexicali’s debt of 946.2 million pesos is the nation’s seventh highest municipal debt, according to a Congressional report.

The Center of Studies of Public Finances of the Mexican lower legislative chamber says Mexicali’s debt is just below other major cities like Tijuana, Monterrey, Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Zapopan and Leon, and above others like Cancun and Culiacan, Sinaloa.

The report adds that Mexicali’s $47.31 debt is not on top in terms of debt per capita or as a percentage of federal funds allotted to municipalities.

The report says the debt of the first top ten municipalities is 57.4 percent of all municipal debt. City debt decreased 15 percent in the last year, the center explained. That reduction is attributed to a new Law of Finance Discipline enacted in 2016.
