Several nonprofit groups had requested Águilas de Mexicali baseball club to stop using fireworks during the inaugural match at Nido de Los Águilas Stadium.
The request was made by representatives of the Environmental Civic Committee composed by dozens of groups and organizations.
The petition was received by Club President Dio Alberto Murillo.
According to the petitioners, fireworks cause air pollution to residents and especially to those attending the game.
The committee said Murillo committed to study the petition.
The committee has asked to instead use other amenities like lights.
“Traditions must evolve,” the petition reads. “Let’s be responsible.”
The City’s Department of Environmental Protection said given Mexicali is one of the 10 most polluted cities in the country no permits will be authorized for fireworks. The agency explained that the city commonly reports levels of high pollution that are within healthy boundaries.
