Members of the opposition said property tax has increased in some cases 200 percent.

Elected officials and leaders of the National Action Party asked Mexicali Mayor Norma Bustamante to implement austerity measures given the tax raise.

Mexicali City Councilman Rudecindo García said the tax of an empty lot in Los Algodones rural town increased two-fold, while the tax paid by an owner of a residence in Colonia Coahuila (next to the Autonomous University of Baja California) climbed from little over $30 last year to around $55.

Other residential areas saw tax increases of 60 percent and over — well above the 7 percent inflation increment.
