Mexicali Mayor Norma Bustamante said if the authorities do not address irregular immigrant crossing in the East Port of Entry within the next 10 days the commercial port could be closed.

The mayor said Mexican authorities had met US Border Patrol leaders to discuss the issue. Another meeting has been scheduled for next week.

According to Bustamante, the crossing by Cuban immigrants last week has impacted manufacturing plants.

Industry Chamber Chairman Alberto Sánchez Torres said at least 130 trucks were unable to cross Friday after Customs and Border Protection closed the commercial port.

US authorities had asked for more surveillance on the Mexican side of the port while business leaders had called the Mexican National Guard to secure the area.

Mexicali Police has held several inspections in the port and had found a stair used by immigrant smugglers.
