Thousands of Baja Californians and residents of neighboring San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, were impacted Sunday by a major power outage.

The incident affected for hours users in Mexicali, Tijuana, Ensenada and Tecate.

Tecate Mayor Darío Benítez and Tijuana Mayor Monserrat Caballero confirmed the power outage Sunday in social media.

Governor Marina Avila also said in social media the outage was being addressed by the Federal Electricity Commission.

San Luis Rio Colorado Mayor Santos Gonzalez said the outage did not affect water supply service.

The Federal Electricity Commission said in a prepared statement that at 5:19 p.m. Sunday issues in the central combined cycle private company provider leef to the shut down and the agency declared an alert in Baja California’s operating system.

Fourteen minutes later the agency started cutting off energy to keep supply stability.

In 47 minutes service was back again for 94 percent of customers, the agency said.

Over 350,000 customers were affected by the outage, the commission said.

At 6:30 p.m. a new outage was ordered affecting little over a quarter million users, with service back at 7:42 p.m.

At 9:37 the energy plant was restarted and was back to normal. The commission said the outage is under investigation in order to avoid it from repeating.
