Property crimes had increased 9 percent in the city, according to media reports.

La Crónica newspaper reported that vehicle theft and residential burglaries had seen a decrease of 5 and eleven percent, respectively.

However, burglaries in businesses and robberies on streets had seen an increase of 12 and 3 percent, respectively.

From January to October the city has reported 8,420 crimes, above the 7,758 of the same period for last year.

Domestic violence remains as the top crime in the city, the newspaper said based on reports of the state Attorney General’s office. 

Between January and October 0f 2020 Mexicali recorded 172 homicides — a figure that has risen to 237 or 38 percent this year.

Mexicali Citizen’s Public Safety Committee Chairman Angel Zaizar said while most of the robberies reported had been occurring in convenience stores, homicides are caused by fights among criminal gangs. The newspaper said the areas with the most crime reports are Valle de Puebla, Valle de Pedregal, González Ortega and Angeles de Puebla in southeastern Mexicali, as well as Independencia, Hidalgo and Civic Center in the city’s midtown, and Pueblo Nuevo, Downtown and Colonia Nueva close to the US entrance.
