A company representative unveiled details about the Tres Mares or Three Seas project that seeks to import Sea of Cortez water for the Salton Sea.

Nathan White, CEO and founder of GESS, Inc., introduced the project during a legislative hearing held Monday.

White told Baja California lawmakers the goal is to start an open dialogue to discuss the project that looks to benefit California and Mexico.

According to the businessman the project would restore the Salton Sea with Gulf of California water.

The CEO underlined the difficulty of importing water from the Pacific Ocean due to the mountains. On the contrary, taking Sea of Cortez water can be easily conveyed through Mexicali’s Laguna Salada.

White said the project would restore the environment while improving the region’s economic situation and providing new recreational opportunities, including tire recycling.

“We have worked on this project for eight years,” White told legislators. “There is an emergency in the Salton Sea and there are not many creative ideas to address it.”

Besides lawmakers, Mexican federal, state and municipal officials took part in the hearing.
