State Attorney General Guillermo Ruiz has announced his departure from office.
On Tuesday, during a public event Ruiz said he has decided to step down.
Later, the resignation document was made public. The departure is effective Friday.
According to state law Assistant Attorney General Hiram Sanchez will assume the duties on an interim basis until the Assembly votes for a new Attorney General.
Ruiz was sworn in on Nov. 2019 for a five year term.
Rumors of his departure began right after Governor Marina Avila was elected.
Days ago the Attorney General’s office released a statement that said Ruiz was still in office. On Tuesday, the agency said crime declined during Ruiz’s tenure.
