Mexicali weightlifter Vanessa Hernández Lizárraga won Monday the 81-kilogram division of the U-17 World Weightlifting Championship held in Jaddeh, Saudi Arabia.

Hernández, 16, got the gold medal after lifting 92 kilograms. Her first two attempts were of 86 and 89 kilograms.

Natia Gadella, of Georgia, was silver and Yekta Jamali, of Iran, was bronze. “Once again a Baja California athlete has put our state and the entire country on top, reaffirming the prestige of our athletes,” state Sports Director nominee Lourdes Cáñez said.
