Around 80,000 illegal vehicles had been listed in the local registry launched by the state government.

Vehicular Identity and Pollution Addressing Director Jorge Alberto Gutierrez said the program is still ongoing.

Everyday up to a thousand vehicles are being registered — mostly in Tijuana, the state official told La Crónica newspaper.

Many of these registering their vehicles are families that only have a single car of which they depend to take children to schools or to go to work.

Vehicles are registered for around $50 each. Director Gutierrez said details are being worked out in order to decide if the fee will be considered for the national registration announced weeks ago by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
